Seventh Wave is the exclusive commercial provider of TNO's Intestinal Model (TIM) in North America. The TIM system is an in vitro gastrointestinal system simulating the dynamic physiological processes as they occur in the GI tract in vivo, which enables the study of various formulations and physiological states on drug absorption.

The overarching function of the TIM is to simulate the transit of orally dosed compounds through the stomach and into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.  This in vitro model incorporates relevant parameters of gastrointestinal physiology such as regulated temperature, pH, peristaltic movement, accurate transit times, and the appropriate secretion of saliva, pancreatic juice, bile, and other gastrointestinal fluids.  In addition, TIM-1 can simulate gastrointestinal physiology for a range of conditions: fed or fasted state, different species (e.g. human, dog, pig), different ages (infant, adult, and elderly), as well as healthy versus diseased conditions.

Data from the TIM systems assists in making early decisions regarding the solubility, formulation performance, and nutrient-drug interactions of novel compounds.  All of these parameters can be assessed prior to the conduct of in vivo work saving time, money, and the number of animals or human trials needed for drug development.
